Originally from Long Island, New York, Matthew came to Indiana to attend Butler University on an athletic scholarship. After living on both coasts, he returned to Indiana and completed his law degree at the Robert H. McKinney School of Law at Indiana University in 2010, graduating in the top quarter of his class and earning the school’s Outstanding Clinic Student of the Year Award.
Matthew began his legal career as a trial attorney with the Marion County Public Defender Agency, where he handled hundreds of hearings, including dozens of jury trials, and built a reputation as a forceful litigator. In 2014, he opened his own solo practice representing clients charged with major felonies and misdemeanors, then joined Cate, Terry & Gookins LLC as Of Counsel in 2018 before joining Riley Cate, LLC in 2021.
Matthew’s practice centers on helping clients who have suffered significant harm or whose freedom is at stake, covering personal injury, business and personal disputes, and criminal defense. He describes his approach as client-centric, prioritizing listening over talking so he fully understands a client’s situation before building a strategy around it.
